SAOA 2024

Dear Members,

Please note that this year’s congress is a week earlier than normal, being held from 26-29 August and once again will be held in Cape Town.

Our SASES sessions will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday and will include combined sessions with SAOTS on upper limb trauma and AfSES, the newly formed African Shoulder and Elbow Society.

We are looking forward to hosting Dr John Sperling from the USA and Dr Jeff Hughes from Australia as our invited guests. Both have a wealth of experience and knowledge and will, as always, be complemented by local speakers from our own SASES to create an informative program.

I would like to please encourage you to submit research for podium presentations, we need to showcase the work that is being done in South Africa. For those in private, I’m sure your local university department can help with ethics and there is always a registrar looking for an M Med topic.

So please block out your diaries for the 26 - 29th of August in the diary, cancel your theatre lists and join us in Cape Town.

Regards

Cameron Anley

SECEC European Travelling Fellowship

The South African Shoulder and Elbow Society will be sponsoring the second edition of the European travelling fellowship which will take place in September 2024.

The fellowship takes place under the banner of the European Society for shoulder and elbow surgery (SECEC), over a three-week period. The selected candidate would be travelling with fellows from New Zealand and Australia. Part of the fellowship includes the SECEC meeting which will be held next year in Munich, Germany, from 4-6 September. The other part of the fellowship involves visitations to centers of excellence in shoulder and elbow surgery around Europe.

While the fellowship is sponsored by the SASES and is under the guidance of SECEC, the itinerary, including choice of visitation centers and organization of travel and accommodation, is done by the fellows. This is an opportunity to visit top European hospitals dedicated to shoulder and elbow surgery and to be exposed to a wide spectrum of pathology and surgical techniques. It is a fantastic learning experience and allows interaction with international colleagues to share knowledge and forge lifelong friendships.

Congratulations to Prof Rachuene who has been awarded this fellowship to represent South African and SASES in 2024.
